Happy 5th birthday!!!

 It was the boy's fifth birthday.  Incredible and surreal.  Even more crazy: he starts kindergarden this year.  He's growing up so fast, we threw a rocket birthday party.   A very tiny rocket party.

I made a cake.  Totally copied from a baker on youtube, but it came out okay.  The top is two giant cookies, one for the front and one for the back.  Held up by white chocolate covered skewers set into a lump of white chocolate.  Then the flames were made of crushed hard candies melted onto lollipop sticks.  Then the cake was a funfetti cake mix hollowed out and filled with frosting and strawberries.  The frosting, meant to look like rocket fumes, was vanilla 7 minute frosting.  Very light and meringue like.

A birthday whirlwind

A lot happens the month of August.  The boy and husband have birthdays within a week of each other, and the boy goes back to school.  Our baby is no longer a baby, but a 4 year old.  Yikes!

Husband wanted some ice cream, and since it was a birthday whirlwind, we got some.  The boy wanted some "blue".

We had the kids paint on large boxes to look like robots.  Husband I thought it was an amazing idea.  After all, the boy had fun painting the one we made together in the spring and still enjoys playing with it.  But the kids painting took about 5 minutes and mostly around the neck of the boxes, so you can't see in the picture.  But from what the parents said the day after, the boxes were a big hit.

And now for something completely different.

Andrew's nephew had a birthday party, Hobbits being the theme.  Andrew had to go all out and rent a costume.  He was the hit of the party.  All the boys there were going after him with their wooden and plastic swords. It looked like a scene from a low rent fantasy movie: a bunch of poorly costumed boys of Neverland attacking a knight from Monty Python with Nerf weapons.
